Companion Portable Liquid Oxygen (LOX) offers medical oxygen therapy for patients who require continuous oxygen flow. The advantage of Portable Liquid Oxygen over oxygen concentrators is less weight, longer supply, very few parts subject to wear, and higher oxygen flows. Compared with oxygen cylinders or oxygen tanks, the LOX portable oxygen machine generally offers less weight, longer supply, greater mobility, better treatment outcomes and better patient health. The trade-off for these advantages is costs. Oxygen concentrators are the low cost option while LOX remains the best option for patient health. (See the 6-month LOX study Domiciliary liquid oxygen versus concentrator treatment in chronic hypoxaemia: a cost-utility analysis) For patients requiring medical oxygen with continuous flow above 3 LPM, portable oxygen concentrators are unable to meet patient requirements. Portable Liquid Oxygen can offer patients up to 15 LPM of continuous oxygen flow, or fives times the amount of most portable oxygen concentrators.

CAIRE Companion LOX Reservoirs are stationary components of liquid oxygen systems that store liquid oxygen and deliver gaseous oxygen to patients. They are designed to be easy to use, low maintenance, and long-lasting. The reservoirs are made up of four main assemblies:
-
Cryogenic containerA double-walled, vacuum-insulated Dewar that stores liquid oxygen at approximately -173°C/-280°F. The inner vessel is protected from over-pressurization by a primary relief valve, and the vacuum insulation prevents outside heat from causing the liquid to evaporate.
-
Plumbing systemIncludes warming and breathing coils, a vent valve, R/E valve, SRV, high and low pressure lines, pressure gauge, FCV, and QDV (fill connector).
-
Shroud assemblyIncludes a shroud and top cover made of durable plastic to protect the plumbing system’s internal components.
There are two types of CAIRE Companion LOX Reservoirs: standard units and Low Loss units. Standard units can be used to supply breathing oxygen in the home, while Low Loss units can hold liquid oxygen for longer periods of time but don’t provide a direct source of oxygen for breathing. A liquid oxygen supplier will need to periodically refill the reservoir, and the frequency of refills depends on how much oxygen is being used.
